Time Flies – 12 Months Of Freelancing

Posted on Oct 15, 2014 in Journal | No Comments

Believe it or not it’s been exactly a year since I took the plunge and went freelance. I got a reminder yesterday via Timehop which showed me a picture I posted on Instagram of my desk just before I started my first full day working for myself. Look how tidy and organised I was! Things have definitely changed since then. As I type this I am surrounded by scraps of paper, post-it notes, coffee cups and crumbs from too many lunches spent at my desk.

In the weeks leading up to this one  year anniversary I thought a bit about writing a big blog post about what I’ve learned, how I might do things differently if I started again and advice I could offer to other new freelancers but unfortunately I haven’t got round to doing that due to the sheer amount I have had on my plate.  The first few months were slow as I expected, I had a few moments where I even doubted if I’d made the right decision, but soon enough my first few clients started making referrals, I met new clients at social and networking events and before I knew it I was working on a number of projects all at once. I can now happily say that last month was my most productive and successful month yet and I am going from strength to strength.

Maybe next time I have some down time I’ll talk more about the year gone by. Perhaps I’ll make an infographic stating just how many episodes of the Joe Rogan podcast I’ve listened to or how many coconut macaroons I’ve eaten. For now though I’ll just say thank you to all the clients that I’ve had the pleasure to have worked with over the past year and to all the friends, family (and cat!) that have supported me. Here’s to the next 12 months. BRING IT!
